　The Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus), also known as the mejiro (メジロ, 目白), is a small passerine bird in the white-eye family. The specific epithet is occasionally written japonica, but this is incorrect due to the gender of the genus. Its native range includes much of east Asia, including Japan, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, and the Philippines. It has been intentionally introduced to other parts of the world as a pet and as pest control, with mixed results. As one of the native species of the Japanese islands, it has been depicted in Japanese art on numerous occasions, and historically was kept as a cage bird. (wikipedia)

　これは、調布の深大寺公園の近くで撮影したものです。冬ですが、とてもシャイで、じっとすることは1秒もないため、ナイスショットはねらえにくいです。でも、辛抱よく待っていれば、たまに低い枝に降りてくることもあり、その一瞬を狙って何枚か綺麗なショットを撮影できました。

Wikipediaによると、形態は

　全長約12 cmで、スズメよりも小さい。翼開長は約18 cm。緑がかった背と暗褐色の羽を持ち、雌雄同色。目の周りの白い輪が特徴であり、名前の由来ともなっている（なおメジロ科に属する鳥は英名でも "White-eye" と呼ばれ、また中国語名では「繍眼鳥」と呼ばれ、やはり名前の由来となっている）。室町時代からメジロの名で知られている。昔は「繍眼児」という漢字が用いられていた。
　日本で見られる野鳥の中では、ミソサザイ・キクイタダキに次いで最も小さい部類に入る小鳥である。
